Grandma took a sip of the tea Matt had placed in front of her and grimaced.
"Matthew, where has Julie been? I like her tea better than yours."
Matt sighed. He had been putting off this conversation as long as possible. To tell the truth, he was half hoping that Julie would slip through the sieve that had become Grandma's mind.
"Um, well, Ju-Julie's not really going to be comin' around much anymore, Grandma. We kind of - we kind of broke up." Matt's eyes were glued to the floor.
"Oh." Grandma thought on this for a minute. "Why?"
"I don't really know?" Matt hadn't expected to have to explain it. "She met this guy and he-he's older and he's in some stupid band and...we just broke up."
"A band. Those musicians DO turn a girl's head." Grandma stood up and hugged Matt tight. "I will tell you something, Matthew. I remember the day you were born. You were no bigger than -" Grandma looked around the room for something to illustrate Matt's size. Grabbing Matt's football, she exclaimed "-no bigger than this football! When I held you, I thought you were the most beautiful boy. And I still do, inside and out. And if Julie doesn't think so, then she does not deserve you."
Matt smiled just the tiniest bit. "Thanks, Grandma."
Grandma put the football down and settled into her tv-watching chair. "I wouldn't mind if you brought that Tyra Collette around though. I sure could use me a pedicure."
